Capitec, South Africa’s leading financial services group, has launched its in-branch Smart ID service in partnership with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA). Following a successful piloting phase, the service is now live in select branches, marking the beginning of a phased national rollout that will expand to 100 locations by mid-2026. Capitec clients can now apply for a Smart ID via a dedicated in-branch Self-Service Terminal (SSTs) with no prior booking required. The seamless, paperless process takes less than five minutes to complete, and is fully integrated with DHA systems, enabling secure, real-time processing right in the heart of these communities. They will receive a notification when their ID is ready and can then collect it from the branch. The dignity of access For millions of South Africans, the fundamental right to an identity has long been a source of anxiety, requiring taxing journeys, long queues, and sometimes lost income. Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber has noted that more than 4.4 million South Africans over the age of 16 have neither a green ID book or Smart ID card. The human cost of this exclusion is profound. The World Bank’s latest Global Findex report notes that lacking an ID effectively locks people out of the modern economy. Without an ID, people cannot vote, open a bank account or secure formal employment. Added to this, Findex data shows that the distance people travel for document applications is one of the largest barriers keeping them away from opportunities. Minister of Home Affairs, Dr. Leon Schreiber, said: ‘This partnership with Capitec marks a historic step in transforming how South Africans access their identity documents. ‘By bringing Smart ID services into bank branches, we are moving closer to a future where people no longer have to travel long distances or stand in long queues to access this fundamental right. This is what effective public-private collaboration looks like. ‘It uses innovation and national reach to ensure every South African can obtain the identity they need to participate fully in our economy and democracy, closer to where they live. This is our vision to deliver Home Affairs @ home, in action.’ Meeting this high demand in every corner of the country puts significant pressure on the Department of Home Affairs. With a nationwide network of 349 offices, the department continues to provide access to essential services, however only 190 offices are currently equipped to process Smart IDs. By working together, Capitec aims to provide the necessary support and remove the friction that has been preventing widespread access. With more than 860 branches across suburbs, townships and rural areas, Capitec is uniquely positioned to extend access and help ease the pressure in the DHA offices that can issue Smart IDs. As the rollout expands, Capitec’s network will come to serve as a hub that simplifies services by bringing critical services under one roof. ‘Our work with the DHA is about enabling access for all,’ says Graham Lee, Group Chief Executive Officer of Capitec. ‘An ID is a catalyst for economic participation. We serve close to half of South Africa’s adult population, and we know that time is our clients’ most valuable asset. By integrating Home Affairs services into our branches, we are using our scale and technology to shorten long journeys and help fill a real gap in underserved communities.’ Capitec and smart IDs Industry-leading tech Capitec is the first bank to move beyond reliance on stationed Home Affairs officials. Instead, it has developed a proprietary digital integration, built on Amazon Web Services, that connects dedicated in-branch SSTs directly to DHA systems. This enables Capitec

WhatsApp Deleted Messages: Know How to Restore Your Chat History on Android and iPhone
Mumbai, March 8: Losing important conversations on WhatsApp can be a distressing experience, but users have several official channels to recover deleted messages. Because WhatsApp does not store personal message history on its own servers due to end-to-end encryption, recovery is dependent on the backups created by the user through Google Drive on Android or iCloud on iPhone.
To successfully restore deleted chats, users must ensure they are using the same phone number and the same cloud account (Google or Apple ID) that was originally used to create the backup. It is important to note that any messages sent or received after the most recent backup was created cannot be recovered if they were deleted before being saved to the cloud. How to Recover Deleted WhatsApp Messages on iPhone?
To recover messages on an iPhone, ensure you have an existing iCloud backup. You can verify this by checking WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Chat Backup to see the date of your last backup. If a backup exists, uninstall the WhatsApp application from your device and reinstall it from the App Store. Once you verify your phone number and Apple ID during the initial setup process, you will be prompted to “Restore Chat History.” Tap this option to pull your data from iCloud. Ensure your device has sufficient free storage, as a partial backup may occur if the iPhone lacks the space to host the restored data. How to Recover Deleted WhatsApp Messages on Android?
On Android devices, WhatsApp primarily uses Google Drive for cloud backups. If you have a recent backup, uninstall the WhatsApp application and reinstall it from the Google Play Store. After verifying your phone number, the app will scan your linked Google account for existing backups. When prompted, tap “Restore” to begin retrieving your messages and media. For those who may not have a recent Google Drive backup, Android also maintains local backup files on the device’s internal storage in the “Databases” folder. Advanced users can manually rename these files to restore them, but using the Google Drive method remains the most straightforward and reliable approach for most users.

Assam: Congress–Raijor Dal alliance talks hit deadlock over Dhing seat
Guwahati: The proposed pre-poll alliance between the Congress and in Assam appears to have hit a deadlock after prolonged seat-sharing negotiations failed to produce a consensus, with the regional party attributing the breakdown to the Congress’ refusal to concede the Dhing Assembly constituency in Nagaon district.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi said repeated rounds of discussions between the two parties had failed despite the regional party progressively reducing its seat demands in an effort to reach an agreement.
According to Akhil Gogoi, Raijor Dal had initially proposed contesting 27 seats but later brought the number down to 20 and subsequently to 15 in order to facilitate a compromise with the Congress. The Congress eventually agreed to allocate 13 seats, though only four of them were from the list of constituencies proposed by Raijor Dal. Even after indicating its willingness to accept most of the Congress’ conditions, the party insisted on retaining the Dhing constituency, which eventually became the principal sticking point in the negotiations.
Raijor Dal also expressed dissatisfaction over a joint press conference held on March 6 by the Congress along with three other opposition parties from which it was excluded, stating that the development had hurt the party’s self-respect.
In the statement, the party further alleged that it had repeatedly made concessions to help build a united opposition front against the BJP but claimed that the Congress had attempted to pressure it into accepting its terms.
Despite the apparent deadlock, leaders in the Congress indicated that efforts to revive the alliance were still under way. Dispur Congress candidate Mira Borthakur said Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi had travelled to New Delhi on Sunday to consult the party’s central leadership on the issue.
She said the APCC leadership remained keen on forging an alliance with Raijor Dal and expressed hope that discussions with the All India Congress Committee leadership would help resolve the differences. She added that a final decision would be taken after consultations with the party’s central leadership.
Meanwhile, Raijor Dal’s candidate for the Jalukbari constituency in Kamrup (Metropolitan) district, Ramen Borthakur, said he would reconsider contesting from the seat if the alliance with the Congress does not materialise. In that case, he indicated that he may instead contest from the Dispur constituency, reiterating the party’s commitment to defeating the BJP in the state. -

Kuwait & Saudi Arabia Hit by Attacks Amid Iran-Israel Escalation
1
Kuwait has been targeted with ballistic missiles, with its air defenses intercepting and destroying three incoming projectiles. Prior to this, drone attacks targeted fuel tanks at Kuwait International Airport. Civilian infrastructure sustained damage from debris resulting from the defensive measures. Simultaneously, Saudi Arabia reported intercepting and destroying drones in the east of its capital, Riyadh. Israel’s Response and International Reactions
Israel has launched another wave of attacks against Iran, targeting what it describes as the ‘military infrastructure of the terror regime’ across multiple locations within the country. This escalation follows previous strikes and underscores a rapidly deteriorating security landscape.
China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi has criticized the US-Israeli attacks on Iran, stating that power does not grant the right to act with impunity and warning against a return to a ‘law of the jungle’ global order. Speaking in Beijing during the National People’s Congress, Wang called for a ceasefire and an complete to the conflict, characterizing the situation as a war that benefits no one. Succession Concerns in Iran
Within Iran, the Assembly of Experts is reportedly nearing a consensus on the succession of the country’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. Although, some hurdles remain in the process, specifically regarding whether a physical meeting of the assembly is required for a final decision. The Widening Regional Impact
The recent exchange of attacks highlights the potential for a broader regional conflict. The involvement of multiple nations – Iran, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait – demonstrates the interconnectedness of security concerns in the Middle East. The Gulf States are facing a critical juncture in their efforts to defend against Iranian actions. The Role of Drone Warfare

CBI registers FIR against Anil Ambani, Reliance Communications in Rs 1,085 crore bank fraud case
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against industrialist Anil Ambani, his company Reliance Communications Limited, and its former director Manjari Ashok Kacker in connection with an alleged bank fraud case involving more than Rs 1,085 crore.
According to the FIR registered by the agency on March 5, the case has been filed on a complaint by Punjab National Bank (PNB). The complaint was lodged by Santoshkrishna Annavarpu, Chief Manager of the bank’s Stressed Assets Management Branch in Mumbai.
As per the FIR, the accused allegedly cheated PNB and United Bank of India (now merged with PNB) during the period between 2013 and 2017, causing a wrongful loss of about Rs 1,085.19 crore to the banks.
The alleged loss includes Rs 621.39 crore to PNB and Rs 463.80 crore to United Bank of India.
The FIR states that the accused persons allegedly entered into a criminal conspiracy and dishonestly induced the banks to sanction credit facilities to Reliance Communications. Investigators suspect that the loan funds were diverted and misused, leading to alleged criminal breach of trust and misappropriation.
According to the complaint, the loan accounts were later classified as non-performing assets in 2017 after the borrower allegedly failed to maintain financial discipline and violated loan conditions.
The bank also informed investigators that the account was declared fraudulent in February 2021 following findings of a forensic audit conducted by BDO India LLP. The audit reportedly pointed to alleged diversion of bank funds and transactions with related parties.
Based on the complaint, the CBI has registered the case under sections 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code, along with provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Unknown persons and unknown public servants have also been named in the FIR. (ANI)
